With a limit price of 25.000 € a Wwork by Zdzisław Beksiński in our last room auction. In an exciting and bidding war lasting more than 8 minutes, the painting finally achieved a fabulous result of € 117,500 (inc. buyers premium)!
After an extremely successful auction, we have now been entrusted with another painting by the well-known Polish artist and is expected to be called in our upcoming hall auction! We are pleased to present you the painting already now.
how in all of Beksiński's works, the artist leaves the interpretation of his work completely up to the viewer himself and so in the following text we too can only give our own interpretation of the meaning and message of his painting.
The presented work, is dated with the year 1970 and thus not only moves in the same creative period, how our already auctioned object, but even comes from the same year.
Beksiński's painting is dominated by orange-red color. The fire of the underworld, which probably blazes all around, determines the entire object. Just this seems to shine in the wide open eyes of the foremost and clearly recognizable figure.
The funeral procession is led by a Valkyrie. A female human-like spirit being. One of those maidens who come from the Nordic mythology from the entourage of the father of the gods Odin and known as his daughters. They have abilities to determine the fate and choose on the battlefield honorably fallen deceased to lead them to Valhalla - the final resting place.
If she thus leads the procession, the deceased, unidentifiable human shells seem to have been honorable persons after all? So a corpse is already lifted up into the kingdom of heaven with the separated shining soul in front. While all other figures follow the Valkyrie.
how in a procession the figures walk ahead. But here not only a holy figure, but the church itself on is carried on the shoulders. The house of God is shaped here as a cube and is carried forward with Jesus Christ on the cross and tightly clasped. it seem to follow other abstracted on the shoulders carried buildings. So is just a Mayan temple, which could probably symbolize the ancient spiritual and high cultures. The rest of the train disappears into the distance.
Beksiński leaves us with questions
Also in this object questions arise in the viewer, which Beksiński provokes critically in its unmistakable formal language. Are the institutions and sacred site put to rest here? Are they to be recognized because the persons went into battle because of them and their faith and died honorably? how is an honorable life decided?
Once again the artist leaves us with questions and forces us to deal with such questions. Once again it are questions about life, death, the underworld and the kingdom of heaven - it are questions of faith, which he brings up in his artistic dramatic and morbid way in his painting.
