Heiner Knaub - Playing with shapes and colors in the sense of the Bauhaus

Strongly influenced by Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, the Eberbach-born artist Heiner Knaub mastered the game with forms and colors in the sense of Bauhaus. Now selected works of Knaub are exhibited in the gallery Jutta Kabuth.

Heiner Knaub (* 1904 in Eberbach; † 1975 ibid.) studied from 1928 until his graduation in 1931 at Bauhaus Dessau . With Wassily Kandinsky he learned abstract form elements and analytical drawing, with Oskar Schlemmer nude drawing and with Paul Klee the primary gestlatung of the surface. In the further course of his studies, he turned to the theory of building. From 1931-1933 he studied at the Munich Art Academy under Max Doerner.

After his studies, Knaub became artistic director of the Drinnberg glass workshop in Mannheim, and later he was a teacher at the Gewerbeschule II in Heidelberg. Immediately drafted at the beginning of the war, he came as a soldier to Russia and Romania. During the war his first wife died, his studio was totally destroyed by bombs and a large part of his work was destroyed. Seriously ill, he returned to his hometown at the end of the war, where he hardly ever appeared in public as artist again. Only posthumously discovered his hometown of Eberbach and later Heidelberg Knaub as artist.

Heiner Knaub and the Bauhaus

The Bauhaus had set itself the goal of clarity, objectivity and practicality, overcoming historicism, as well as the interaction of art and industry in the sense of comprehensive life design. Characteristic was the abolition of the boundary between artist and craftsmen and the understanding of design as a universal basic concept for life. The artist was to be a designer of form, whether as an architect, painter or photographer. With the reduction on the basic forms square, circle and triangle as well as on the basic colors red, blue and yellow revolutionized the then prevailing art direction.

Starting from his early works from the years 1947 / 1948 up to his late work from the years 1971-74 the, strongly influenced by constructivism formal language of a Kandinskys and Klees, which translates the respective picture motive into constructive tensions from line patterns and color surfaces, shows up. Space and object were equally broken down into structural units and with these compositional building elements Knaub creates an artificial planar system of order, which subjugates the motif not more to the perspective view of space. Within this free spatial order he composes his combination play of physical forms and colors.
