Hubert Salentin was born in Zülpich and grew up in poor circumstances in the then Prussian Rhine province on. Despite discovering his passion for art at a young age, Salentin initially spent 14 years of his professional life as a blacksmith and before devoting himself entirely to painting. Salentin was a respected master blacksmith in his hometown, but at this time he was already creating his first oil paintings and small-format portraits of citizens of the city.

At the age of 26 he decided to give up the blacksmith's profession and to begin his painting studies at the newly founded municipal art school in Cologne , to finally be accepted 3 years later at the Düsseldorf Academy. Here he studied under the professors Carl Ferdinand Sohn, Adolph Tidemand and as a master student with Wilhelm von Schadow, the co-founder of the Düsseldorf School of Painting.
During his time at the Düsseldorf Academy, Salentin developed his own characteristic style with a preference for for atmospheric depictions of simple rural life. how Salentin's ability to capture the essence of peasant life made him a renowned painter of the 19th century and so from today's perspective his works the viewer for seem a mirror of his time.
The honorary citizen of the city of Zülpich worked as artist until he died in 1910 in Düsseldorf . Although he belonged to the important genre painters of the 19th century, Salentin fell into oblivion shortly after his death and remained only a small circle of art lovers a term. Through various exhibitions and auctions in recent years, works of Hubert Salentin have again increasingly moved into the focus of attention.

His work "Hol über", for which Salentin on received a gold medal at the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, was called in our house for 6000 € in the limit and finally achieved after a long bidding war a Result of 35,000 € (inc. buyers premium).

Strikingly is, that it here only girls are concerned, according to the clothes from wealthy or peasant house. So sweetly how they are shown here, poetry is certainly recited here, because girls were allowed to learn around 1870 not further about sciences or achievements. The shepherd boys are to be found further back to the left side of the picture sitting in the grass, their sheep resting to the right side of the picture - framing the quiet scenery.
